Growing up on Sanibel Island was a rare treasure
My family and I moved from Medford, New Jersey’s Larsen Park Drive to Sanibel Island, Florida’s Bayview Drive in 2001. I was eleven years old and going into the 6th grade. It was an awkward time of life, to say the least, and although experiencing this unpleasant stage of life is a commonality shared amongst most preteens, I was not excited about adding a move to my list of wistful woes, even to a tropical island.
As time progressed, what was once, from my disgruntled perspective, tolerable, suddenly became magical. Splashing in the bay and gulf, eating fresh grouper, boating through turquoise waters in the sunshine, riding through protected, tree canopied bike paths––what more could a kid want?
I would say “hi” to the jumping dolphins as we drove across the causeway to and from the island. Mangroves grew to be fascinating, even enchanting. Sunrises and sunsets are out of this world. Seashells speckle miles of quaint, protected beaches. There truly is no other place like Sanibel and Captiva Islands.
There’s significant consensus on the charm of these islands as they have gained much national and worldwide notoriety over the years. U.S. News ranked Sanibel as #8 on their list of best beaches in the world, and just a week ago, the Today Show featured Sanibel as Family Fun Magazine’s number one family vacation destination in the country.
Somehow amidst the attention, Sanibel still feels like a shared secret. It’s undoubtedly a remarkable place to visit, and I believe, perhaps an even better place to call home.
