There are many factors that contribute towards the appeal of Sanibel real estate–the culture, land, water, people, style and structures–just to name a few.
When it comes to style and structure, what does island architectural style look like on Sanibel? Sanibel planning department director, Jim Jordan, presented an assessment at the commission meeting last week.
Sanibel’s architectural style generally includes “buildings that are rural in character, smaller in stature, understated in design, and incorporate sustainable design elements. Porches, pronounced overhangs, sloped roofs, operable windows, [and] light colors” are also components of the island style.
Within those generally consistent parameters, there are four current sub-styles: “Old Florida, Island Eclectic, Island Contemporary and Caribbean.”
Why was island architectural style a topic of discussion at the last commission meeting? The committee is considering implementing architectural design standards across the island. It would only apply to Sanibel’s Resort Housing District and multi-family and commercial properties (***does not include single-family, duplex, or triplex residential homes).
The advocates’ “desire is not to have a cookie-cutter style of architecture,” but rather to maintain a sense of place and keep Sanibel looking like Sanibel.
