Consumer confidence is important for Sanibel real estate, as it is for most other aspects of business and general public sentiment. That’s why it’s good news that after an increase in consumer confidence in December, the Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index found additional growth in consumer confidence in January. From one month to the next, the overall Index increased from 96.3 to 98.1. The Present Situation Index remained the same, and the Expectations Index increased from 83.0 to 85.9.
The probability-based Consumer Confidence Survey includes several itemized components of consumer confidence, from general business conditions to specific labor market concerns. Across the board, most areas yielded a more positive outlook or stayed about the same. For example, responses about the current business conditions being “good” stayed consistent, but those saying business is “bad” declined.
In addition to more overall optimism about short-term improvement in business conditions, the consumer outlook on future labor market conditions is also on the rise. There are slightly higher expectations for more jobs in 2016, and the proportion of survey participants who anticipate an income raise also increased.
A stronger economy is good news for everyone, and one result is a healthy real estate market.
