The houses on Sanibel and Captiva seem to be getting bigger and better. New builds over the past 10 years on the islands are worlds apart from the homes of the past.
The Captiva and Sanibel real estate markets have already shifted to accommodate these newer, high-tech, ultra luxury homes. But this is just the beginning. It’s likely that we’ll soon see another surge of even “smarter” homes.
According to Amazon founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, “the emergence of artificial intelligence and machine learning in household gadgets is ‘gigantic.'” So if the newer built homes that have already started to hit the market on Sanibel and Captiva are worlds apart, future yet-to-be-built homes may be galaxies apart.
Bezos spoke at a recent tech conference about Amazon’s new home speaker, Echo. It can “turn on lights, access online music and answer queries by waking the speaker by stating the word Alexa.” Bezos said, “it’s hard to overstate how big of an impact this will have on society over the next 20 years. It is big. It doesn’t mean phones are going to go away or that voice actions will replace screens. As long as people have eyes, they have screens.”
It’s hard to know exactly how, and how quickly, artificial intelligence (AI) will permeate households, but we’re about to find out. AI is the topic of much discussion in the tech industry where “sentiments that AI is the next big thing” is shared. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company noticed a shift start to happen in AI three or four years ago. Bill Gates calls AI “the holy grail.”
When it comes to Echo and other smart home products that will hit the market in the coming year, Bezos says, “there is so much more to come … We’re on the edge of a golden era.”
