Besides beautiful beaches, world class shelling, and the ideal, tropical climate, biking is another top attraction for visitors and home owners on Sanibel and Captiva islands.
In addition to drawing avid bikers to the island, Sanibel also has the uncanny ability to turn even couch potatoes into enthusiastic bicyclists. A recent online article highlighted what makes biking on Sanibel so great.
Whether it’s for exercise, or a leisurely ride to the shops and beaches, perhaps the best way to travel Sanibel Island is by bike. On bike, tourists and residents alike get to experience the island’s sights, smells, and sounds. You get to slow down (while still beating out in-season traffic!).
There are 25 miles of dedicated, protected, and often tree-canopied bike paths around the island plus 8 miles of navigable, natural surface paths for your biking pleasure. With multiple bike rental options, there’s no shortage of bike availability. At any time of the day, you can see multiple individuals, couples, and families all over the island – riding solo, tandem, or in the comfort of a kid trailer mobile.
The Sanibel Bicycle Club is a local community group dedicated to promoting biking on the island as well as bike safety. They recently released a video, “Cycling on Sanibel,” to educate individuals on bike safety on our islands.
