With the Olympics coming to a close, we have a feeling we’re not the only ones inspired to get active. Fortunately, Sanibel Island’s ideal climate makes it a wonderful place to have an active lifestyle. Besides the sunshine and just being outside, there are many outdoor sports that adults and young kids can enjoy all year round: swimming, golf, tennis, beach volleyball, and more.
In fact, U.S. beach volleyball Olympian, Brooke Youngquist Sweat, is a Southwest Florida native. She played volleyball in local clubs and at The Canterbury School, moving on to play at the college level at Florida Gulf Coast University. Before the summer games started, the NBC Olympics website posted a great article about Brooke Sweat, our favorite Olympian.
Most of us aren’t professional athletes, but if you still enjoy the competitive nature of sports, there are plenty of clubs to get involved with or follow within the Fort Myers area, including the Fort Myers Beach Volleyball Club, Offshore Sailing School, The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club, The Sanibel Gulf Club, and more. There’s also the Sanibel Sea School specifically for kids. And if you just enjoy a casual game, there are public and private courts all around.
