The trend of adapting your home to accommodate your changing needs as you grow older has a name now: aging in place.
A recent article in the Washington Post, Aging-in-place options most popular with baby boomers, sets the scene;
“According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Americans [65 and older] will rise from 35 million people in 2000 to more than 73 million in 2030. Does this population need to consider a type of home specifically targeted for them?”
Baby boomers certainly are considering, and even arranging, home renovations to accommodate maturing needs. Some modifications can be as simple as adding grab bars, ramps, or lever-handled doorknobs. Other alterations may include widening doors or adding a bathroom to the first floor.
Over half of the individuals who are outfitting their homes with aging in mind are currently under the age of 65, having the foresight to proactively make changes that allow them to age more comfortably.
