The Southwest Florida region continues to grow and expand with more residents and tourists each year. A significant part of that travel comes through the Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW).
The airport opened 33 years ago and has seen significant growth since then, including a brand new, “bright, modern, state-of-the-art terminal” that opened in 2005.
Lee County commissioners and SWFL airport representatives recently announced a plan set in motion to expand and improve the Terminal Access Road. The road will widen from 4 to 6 lanes in order to accommodate the burgeoning region, particularly during the winter peak season when visitors and seasonal resident numbers boom.
With a hefty price tag of 6.7 million, the Florida Department of Transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration, and Lee County Port Authority are all pitching in. Construction should take about a year.
This kind of construction is not unprecedented. RSW won an award for an expansion project in 2014, which included more space for aircraft taxiing, more short-term and long-term parking, and a cross-field taxiway system. All for founded reasons––the airport is one of the top 50 U.S. airports for passenger traffic. In 2015, it served approx. 8.4 million passengers, almost 1 million more than just 2 years prior, having approx. 7.6 million passengers in 2013.
All of this is to say, as the closest airport to Sanibel Island, this is indication that there’s a huge draw to the Southwest Florida region. As Sanibel realtors, we can understand why.
