It’s likely that if you live in Southwest Florida, you either own a boat or you have a friend who owns a boat. Surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico and San Carlos Bay, Sanibel and Captiva Islands are a boater’s paradise.
Around our office, avid boaters Linda and Joe Mondelli are good friends to have. If you can’t find them at the John R Wood office on Periwinkle Way, Joe and Linda are most likely somewhere on the water. The two got their start boating while vacationing on Sanibel Island about 30 years ago when they took sailing lessons from Offshore Sailing School on Captiva Island.
After that, there was no turning back. From summers with their three daughters on their 42′ sailboat to weekend trips and sunset cruises, Joe and Linda have stayed close to the water and active in the boating community.
Most recently, Joe took on the role of Commodore at the Captiva Island Yacht Club. As a member elected, 1-year position, it’s an honor to fulfill and more than just a title. The Commodore serves as the main point person and head of operations of the yacht club during his or her term.
Two of Joe and Linda’s three daughters were able to attend the “Change of Watch” ceremony when Joe was formally installed into the position. In his speech, Joe expressed his gratitude for past Commodores and shared how the support from his and Linda’s family and community have enriched their lives as they “continue to meet new people and enjoy friendships old and new.”
There are many opportunities in Southwest Florida for boaters and those who love being on the water. Waterfront homes on Sanibel and Captiva–many on protected canals with docks–allow the ease of accessibility to take a quick or long ride whenever. Social gatherings, yacht clubs, and more offer community and provide opportunities to meet new people. And boating and sailing lessons are available all over the area for those who are just getting their start. Who knows, it might just be the beginning of something great and meaningful.
