The stork has been good to Gulf turtles. One sea-turtle nest remains in Captiva, which will officially close out the 2014 sea turtle season.
Turtle biologist Kelly Sloan said this season has been good news for the ancient creature making its home for thousands of years along Gulf shores.
“It was a banner year for loggerheads nesting on our beaches,” said Sloan, biologist and Sea Turtle coordinator with the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation, or SCCF. “The nest numbers for the east and west end of Sanibel were 110 and 301, respectively. The previous east end record was 69 nests (set in 2012). We also beat the overall record of 358 nests for Sanibel, set in 2000. Captiva had 124 nests this year. With 535 total documented nests on our beaches, 2014 is tied with 1998 for the second highest nesting season on record for the two islands combined.”
