Rent or buy? It’s the modern-age-old housing question. Lately, the scales have tipped, and it’s in favor of buying.
The news comes from the latest national index from Florida Atlantic University and Florida International University. The research shows that “the United States housing market as a whole is moving deeper into buy territory, suggesting that, on average, residential housing markets around the country are sound.”
We’ve seen significant growth in the real estate market over the past year. Across the country, average home prices increased 5.4 percent since March 2015. Some contributing factors include a recovering economy, stronger job market, and improved consumer confidence. Meanwhile, rents continue to rise. It’s no wonder “buy” is the answer for more Americans.
Individuals are finding another incentive to buy: investment.
“In terms of wealth creation, the U.S. housing market, when considered as a whole, has swung marginally more in favor of home ownership over renting a comparable property and investing monthly rent savings in a portfolio of stocks and bonds.”
