Despite the housing supply shortage and the opportunity it presents for sellers, potential sellers maintain uncertainties about the market and if or when to sell.
Florida Realtors sums up the results of a recent Redfin survey well: “while a majority of prospective home sellers think prices will rise in the next year, a common concern is that they won’t be able to sell before prices fall – an indication of the general sense of indecision characterizing homeowners this fall.”
Further, even though prospective sellers are confident in the market, 55% don’t plan to sell, and 28% would like to sell but aren’t sure of the timing. Here are some of the survey results:
Top reasons homeowners want to sell
- Upgrade to better home
- Turn a profit
Top reasons homeowners are hesitant to sell
- Problems finding new home they want
- Prices may fall before they can sell
Homeowners who would like to move into nicer, bigger homes are perhaps in the most difficult position. Low inventory and rising prices means they could get a good deal selling their current home, but it could make it more difficult to find the upgrade they’re looking for.
