With a vibrant natural habitat and exotic wildlife, there are endless opportunities to capture beautiful photographs on Sanibel Island. Every day is a new piece of art.
Last month JN “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge had their 28th annual Amateur Nature Photography contest. Quite a popular event, this year’s event included participants from 14 states and 4 countries. As always, three judges reviewed the submissions; a refugee staff member, a professional photographer, and a member of the Sanibel community.

It might not be such a surprise that the subject of all three winning photographs happened to be fowl; in addition to beaches and shelling, Sanibel is known for it’s vibrant and active bird population. The Island Sun featured the top three taking center stage: a white pelican, yellow-crowned night heron, and blue heron. You can find all 13 winning photographs on the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society website.
Besides photography contests, Sanibel and Captiva Islands are a photographers playground, both professional and amateur. When you catch a stunning sunset or a wildlife resident crossing the street, you can’t help but snap a pic with your iPhone. That’s everyday life on Sanibel.
